Why Timing Matters

Ice doesn't become safe overnight. It builds up slowly across the whole winter:

  • November: Lakes are just starting to freeze. Ice is thin and dangerous.
  • December:Ice gets thicker, but it's still risky in most spots.
  • January: Ice is usually safe for most activities on many lakes.
  • February: Ice is at its thickest. This is often the safest month.

Weather changes everything. A warm spell slows down freezing. An early cold snap can speed it up. That's why the calendar alone can't tell you if ice is safe.

Never assume ice thickness without testing it locally.

Use This Chart to Plan Your Trip

  • Want to go ice fishing in November? It's probably too early — ice is often only 0 to 2 inches thick.
  • Want to go in January? There's a good chance of 4 to 6 inches, which is safer for foot traffic.
  • Want to bring a snowmobile? Wait until February, when ice often reaches 8 inches or more.

But no matter the month, always drill test holes when you arrive. The chart shows what's typical, not what's true on your lake today.
